Truth is not relative. It is a constant. For example, the earth has always revolved around the sun even when this was considered false by the majority of scholars.
But when the truth affects us on a personal level it is usually greeted with disdained and anger. Why do you think?

Consider this,
Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Jesus is saying that you can only know the truth if you follow his teachings.
and consider this passage,
"You are a king, then!" said Pilate.
Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
Here Jesus says if you listen to Jesus you will be on the side of truth.
Jesus also said
"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well.
So Jesus is the truth and the only way to heaven is through him. This is very exclusive!!
But this angers many when confronted with this truth. Is our pride to blame?

Each of us lives in a world of 'quasi-reality'. Our individual reality is never equal to absolute reality, which by definition would be 'truth'. So 'truth' disrupts our perceived reality and that is painful, often very painful. Often so painful that people deny 'the truth'.
Einstein said "if the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts". In this context I would paraphrase him this way: "if the truth doesn't fit your reality, change or ignore the truth". Most of us do this because it is less painful than acknowledging reality.

When people know something to be real, and later find out by some means what they believed to be true is false it challenges them. Sometimes the truth can be painful because it is easy to live a lie. The truth does not always have to be painful though. I found that the truth is painful when it forces you to change your outlook on reality, and maybe the way you live your life. For example, some people blame everyone but themselves for all of the problems they have in life whether it be no money, no friends or a crappy job. They would love to live in their distorted world thinking only of themselves without taking the time to realize they are the ones that need to change instead of everyone else.

The 'awful truth' is what Sigmund Freud would use in his technique of Psychoanalysis to induce a carthartic reaction (which was an explosive emotional outburst which could be violent) as a method of cleansing or healing psychological damage.
The truth tends to elicit conflicting intellectual impulses both painful and pleasurable to the human ego.

As humans we like to be in control, and we like to think that we have more control over life than we do! And when we find out that life is not going the way we want, we get angry at our selves for not having the life that we envisioned. So, out of our own disappointment comes the anger.

The old saying that "truth" hurts is true in most cases. People do not like to hear something that goes against something they believe in.

Sometimes it is just easier for us not to believe the truth, say ur best friend was sleeping with ur boyfriend........it would be so much easier to believe that they would'nt betray you, instead of believing that they r making u look like a fool.

Because many people live in their own world. I do not mean this offensively, simply that they are happy in their own little bubble. When this bubble is challenged, it risks changing their happiness, therefore many people become hostile when faced with such a situation.
That's my view on it anyway.

The truth never hurts, it doesn't even care. It is our delusions which hurt as they crumble away in the light of truth.
