Take some pieces of chicken wire and place them over the bulbs after you've planted them. Secure the wire with landscapers staples or make your own staples from coat hanger wire. Cut a piece of hanger 9-13 inches in length and bend it in a u-shape with the base of the u about 1 inch long. Tap them into the ground in the corners.

I plant mine in gopher baskets. The mesh is 3/4 of and inch. It keeps the gophrs, and I assume the squirrels too out.

Its a tough thing. There are some cover plants what detere digging squirrles. Can't remeber what plants detere digging animals. Rue? Catnip? Creping thyme. Things that are smelly.

Try scattering some bloodmeal over the bulbs. It will keep rabbits away.

A nice, well trained fox terrier works best tho.

And bb guns.

Its a tough deal. I'd give the gopher baskets a try. Cover the top too.

Try some poison if it is just too bad. Lowering the population always help reduce what they eat. The parrafin/wax blocks that are made for rats (Maki) should work. The poison does not effect any animals that get the carcass. Just a quick heartattack for the chewing rodents.

I have tried everything known to man to get rid of squirrels and rabbits without success.
The only solution for getting rid of most outside critters is to eliminate the available water and food which will be very difficult. Next best bet is to cover the flowers with a wire net.

They also have on the market a water gun that shoots off whenever the sensor picks up a movement. Just keep it away from the sidewalk or where people are around as they will get a free shower.

We have ground squirrels (gray diggers) The only bulb they don't like is daffadil (spelling?) bulbs. Try planting them around your other bulbs to protect them. I've read to plant them in a chicken wire frame to protect them, but that sure would be a lot of work. Good luck on this, I know what a problem it is.

You should give them something they CAN eat.
They are not doing this to be a nuisance, they need to live somewhere and eat, too.
Try giving them something closer to their natural needs and hopefully they will leave your garden alone.

A pellet or BB gun is very effective.
