Have your friend write a note to you on the pages. Ask them what they did that day and write it down. Or thoughts they have about you. Enclude music favorites in it and see how things change over the years with them.
Write there age on it to and date.
I am 40 now and i forget many things about close friends i had when younger. But when i find a old picture with there writing on back of it it brings me back to that time.

I have a gorgeous purple suede, embroidered book that my sister bought me a few years ago. (It's only about 1/4 full despite regular use!)
I always carry it in my bag and use it for everything.
I jot down recipes, especially when I've tried something new and know I would forget it after a week or so!
I keep people's numbers or addresses and birthdays or special occasions.
I doodle pictures or costume ideas (I like fancy dress!)
I write out my Christmas ideas for people (which is handy so you don't get people the same thing 2 years running!)
I plan out pictures of what crafts I want to make.
I stick in meaningful bits and bobs if they are small. (I have a couple of little cards from presents people have given me and a note that my husband left me)
I've even started writing a short story and note down ideas for that or stick in loose bits of paper if I've jotted down an idea at work.
I always have a 'to do' list on the go in my book and also use it for shopping lists.
When I'm annoyed or really happy about something I do occasionally use it as a diary but I like the fact that there's no pressure if I should write once a day or once a year. I know that as there are no pre-written dates I am not wasting pages.
When my Nan passed away recently we found years and years worth of diary's that she had kept, I'm hoping that one day one of my relatives might find some joy looking through my journal (or journals depending on how much I use!)
Who knows, maybe they might even find some decent recipes there!!

Use it. It's yours! The use may vary from day to day. You could make a point of using it for *something* each day, just so you'd be able to enjoy the POWER of making your choice that day.
Once in a while it might be a diary. It could become your books read list, or your movies seen, or a place for brainstorms or half-baked ideas. It can be a playground or personal documentation (i.e. the license of the car that stole your parking space).
The alternative is to begin a collection or hoard of blank journals. Before I began regular journaling, I had a hoard of 6. Eventually I stopped being shy and began using them ... still picking up other ones as I go along.

Just use it as a note pad. Or just write down things you want to remember about your day, or song lyrics. You don't have to be a poet or use it as a diary - you can use it for whatever you want. I have one I keep in my living room just to write down things I see on TV - websites, products I want to try, when the new season of TV shows are coming out, things I want to look up online etc.

Write in it. It does not have to be poetic. It doesn't necessarily
have to be a diary per say. Just write what is in your heart, and the words will come.

You know what would be more fun? Head down to Micheals craft store (if you have one, if not your local craft store) and get a plain journal. Then go around picking out things to decorate it with. SO much more fun, I promise :)

Put special recipes from loved ones in it...maybe a grandma's recipes or friends and other close family members' recipes. Maybe they can even write it in their own handwriting if you want. It will be something really special in the future.

write stuff in it. whenever your mad and need to express your feelings, or, if your happy or anything else, just write in it. whatever comes to mind. hey, it could turn out to be song lyrics. song lyrics almost never rhyme.
