What has Gandalf been doing during the seventeen years following Bilbo’s disappearance?
i need help with the question, i do not recall in the reading what he did during this time. please help...thank you very much!

It is mentioned in passing that he has been investigating the origins or Bilbo's ring. He searches for and questions Gollum, he goes to Gondor to read Isildur's writings. And of course whatever else a wizard does would take up some of that time. I know I read the Trilogy two or three times before I got it all straight.
