I have recently moved to an area that has rather sandy soil. Not really loamy, mostly sand where the water just drains right off it. What do I need to add to my beds to make them suitable for growing spring bulbs such as crocus's and daffodils? Can I just build a raised bed on top of it and add regular soil on top of it or is this going to create a problem?

Add any organic material that you can get your hands on. Dig it into the soil. We think this would be better than placing regular soil above the sandy soil because the sandy layer will just drain the raised beds anyway, making it necessary to water more often.

When you plant the bulbs, add some bone meal or bulb booster and they will do just fine.

When you choose your daffodils, get some that are early, mid and late spring bloomers so you have a long time to enjoy these beautiful plants.

Just tilling in some compost would ptrobably be enough.

It may be really good soil. Have it tested for NPK &pH.

Just adding a sprinkle of bone meal when planting the bulbs wll be enough. Or drop a handfull of compost or much into the hole and mix it when planting.

Daffs will do fine in just bout any soil, crocuses aren't really picky either.

Putting a raised bed on top of the sand is an okay idea. Just be sure you don't use bad soil to fill it. But it would probably be better to just mix whatever you wuold use in a raised bed into the sand.

You can add about 2 or 3 inches of soil and it should do the trick, worked for me!

Raised beds will work, add lots of peat and bone meal.
