A state that votes earlier in the primary season when things are not decided has a much bigger influence on sense of direction of what the American people are thinking. With this in mind, candidates spend much more time AND MONEY on campaigning in those states. Governors are also involved in this thinking and getting more of the press and money into their states is important to that state's economy. If a state waits until May or June and the nomination is more or less decided, the press will give a big yawn to that primary and no candidate will spend much on influencing primary votes. It's all about the Benjamins (hundred dollar bills).

for the same reason California has moved theirs from June to February...to be more influential in the process.

If we wait until later in the year...most decisions have already been made for us and the primaries are just a formality.
