I'm trying to reformat the hard drive on a Toshiba Sattelite laptop that is a little old. I have a full install CD of Windows 2000 and I need to boot from it but I can't figure out how to get this computer to boot from CD. On desktop PC's, I've always pressed DEL during boot up to access the BIOS where I would tell it to boot from CD, but I can't figure out how to access the BIOS on this laptop. If I can't get it to boot from the Windows install CD, then I need a way to totally wipe the hard drive and then be able to access the CD drive from a DOS prompt so I can type "Setup" to do the Windows install. I have old 3.5" DOS disks but I can't remember how to do a reformat from DOS. Any suggestions?

Boot up DOS and type:

format C:

The key to get the bios isn't always DEL. Sometimes it is F1, F2, F10, F10, or even ESC.

Are you able to boot? If so you really don't need to get to BIOS. As another said look on the web and find out what the button is that you need to hit to do a full, complete and destructive (you lose all but it is the same as the day it was purchased) restore. This is usually one of the F keys that you bang on repeatedly as it boots.

Even in 2000 this was usually built in and is a better option that a reformat via DOS. You can as well download this off the web if you need a disk....... the computer should recognize it regardless.

You don't need to format the hard drive before re-installing. The installation program will format it if you want. Since you have 3.5" floppies, you can simply boot from them, use that to access the CD, and run the "setup.exe" program from the CD without booting from it.
The web site below will help you to get access to the CD if you don't have that right now.

Use a homestead windows 98SE setup disk and run fdisk to delete the non-dos partition at thechronic which will get rid of Vista. Set 2 partitions , a dos partition and a non-dos partition. set up ninety 8 first on the dos partition format it fat32. Then set up XP on the prolonged non-dos partition and format it NTFS. once you boot it provides you with the call of which os to load. purely difficulty i can make certain is that there won't be any ninety 8 drivers for the assorted hardware interior the laptop. The greater cutting-edge chipsets etc wernt even seen whilst ninety 8 grow to be out.

Try pressing F12 or F11 during boot up. This should give you access to change your boot option to CD
