Mummy-to-be...use your common sense: abortions have been around as long as women have been giving birth. Nowadays its definitely a lot safer but unfortunately, its always been practiced in one form or another. Except in Victorian times, you were more likely to die from it. Im not a supporter of abortion by any means, but its a fact of life that its there.

In Victorian times, women would use abortifacient herbs, apply abdominal pressure, sharp instruments, drink immense amounts of alcohol, practice violent exercise and heavy lifting, even bloodletting. Sounds like she is either pulling a fast one or being really foolish. If she was dead set on terminating a pregnancy, Planned Parenthood offers free and easy services. Sounds like she is just looking for attention from the guy and that is really sad. I think its horrific to not only use a baby as a pawn in a relationship or "joke" about aborting it. The killing of a child is nothing to joke about.

Stay away from that girl!

I would imagine it means some sort of unsafe do-it-yourself technique involving large amounts of castor oil, hot baths, drinking lots of alcohol, using knitting needles and the like.

There was no such thing as medically managed abortion back then and whilst it is true women have been having them since the dawn of time until recent times abortions were do-it-yourself affairs which involving consuming certain herbs, drinking alcohol, taking hot baths, chucking yourself down the stairs or resorting to dangerous things like using knives and needles. Plenty of women died from doing this or were left unable to ever have children again.

Not very nice and not something to joke about.

well this sounds pretty bad but back when they didnt have abortions i know that a lot of girls died because they would use coat hangers to cause a miscariage by popping the uterus. And there were lots of women that did this and they died from it> not sure this is what your friend is talking about or if this is a victorian abortion or not but its a shot at it

Only ever seen it on films Give the girl a lot of alcohol as not to feel the pain and then use a sharp implement to disrupt the foetus then resulting in a miscarriage. I think or throwing them selves down the stairs!!! Why cant she just use the NHS ?

she probably means either using a coat hanger to pierce the cervix and cause abortion or tying a washilg line around her abdomen to kill the foetus which were both common ways "back street" abortions were carried out in victorian times when abortion was illegal.

I think it has something to do with large quantities of gin (that's why gin is called "Mother's Ruin") and hot mustard baths.
