Free usually equates to bad. I'd say it would depend on the service. For example, free brain surgery? No thank you. Free internet, yes please.

> if i had time restrictions etc and the paid service was more flexible
> if the free service wasn't very good
> if i felt i'd gain more from the paid service

i suppose it all depends what it's for - for instance, if we were talking about childcare then i'd want to feel my daughter was safe and happy so would pay for a good service even if there was a free service available which wasn't as good. if it was a training course, i'd want whichever suited me best, if flexible learning and good support and i'd be willing to pay for that even if there was a free service out there.

hope my comments help! Rebecca x

Hope this answers your question - I pay, for example, for a desktop translation service rather than go for a freebie like worldlingo or whatever, simply because the one I pay for is 95% accurate (I can correct the rest myself) but the other freebie ones I've tried are barely 50% accurate. Yet on YA people send each other translations (in response to requests) that have been done on freebie sites, and I always think, 'But what if the recipient thinks that's a GOOD translation??'. Not fair on anyone.

If the service was better by paying. For instance, I have a friend who is a hairdresser and can cut my hair for next to nothing but I still prefer to go to the hairdresser's as I can choose when to have my hair cut, all the equipment is there and it's easier to complain if I don't like the end result.

I'm a single mum with benefits and a part-time job so am entitled to free dentist treatment. However, I can't get registred with an NHS dentist, so I have to pay privately. I don't mind this...I need my teeth!

If the paid service didn't cost much, and was much more convenient than the free equivalent service.

I would pay for a nicer restaurant take away if it was better than a free delivery at a not so nicer restaurant. If you understand that :-)

Here is a rule of life.

You can have something done:

a-good

b-fast

c-cheap

You can only pick two.

If something is cheap-it will either not be good or it won't be fast. So if you need it good or fast, prepair to pay.

If it was something I wanted faster, better, with some sort of guarantee, possibly get my money back on etc etc.
