Is the deck builder obligated to remove the sod under the deck? I read the contract; it did not mention anything about removing the sod.

You're paying him to build a deck, not landscape. After a while the grass will die from lack of sun anyway.

It could be a problem. My father built a deck outside one of their back doors and a wooden walkway leading to the pool. The grass (like bermuda) grew up through the slats (especially on the walkway) and something should have been done under the deck and all to prevent grass or weeds from growing through it. It may not be the deck builder's job after all he was hired to build the deck. You should plan on removing it, hiring someone else who does that or do it yourself before he starts building. If the deck is up off the ground fairly high just spraying a weedkiller may be okay under it. Prepare it and you will prevent a headache later.

which do you mean is ok. the sod or the deck? if the deck is low enough to the ground that no light or
water can get to the sod, it will eventually die. if nothing was mentioned about the sod before they started,
they only removed enough sod to make the deck. if your contract didn't mention doing something with the sod, they weren't going to do anything to it.

It doesn't make any difference if the sod is under there; it won't affect the performance of the deck.

I would suggest to you that you lay a layer of black garbage bags over the grass to cover the entire area under the deck or before its built and then cover that with either bricks or gravel. You don't want anything moving in under there, especially nocturnals that may become rabid.

You should prep the area yourself. If you want the sod removed, you can try asking him about it. Be prepared to pay more IF he's willing to do it. Otherwise, just let it die on its own or spray it with Roundup.

Always ask about these things upfront. Never assume.

No, they do not do that type of work. They are deck builders.

Not unless its in the contract. If it is bothering you buy some weed killer at your local hardware store and spray it out. It would be cheaper that way.
