The first snipers in history were the Colonial farm boys shooting at Red Coats from far beyond their own rifle's range.

The disruption of the chain of command, and British Generals being forced to replace their qualified officers with novices, is considered one of the biggest reasons for Colonial victory over the British...right up there with the help of the French navy.

It is just as legitimate of an argument that the writers of the 2nd amendment wanted to make sure that an invading force would have to face the same type of problem that the British faced when they were trying to advance through the Colonial countryside as, "They didn't know about automatic weapons back then".

The colonists owned the best small arms of their time. This was made easier by the fact the guns were made in Kentucky, but they were the best money could buy, and the authors of the Constitution were fully aware of this fact.

I always notice how people want to restrict folks with mental illnesses from having guns. I guess Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill could control great armies, but nowadays they are not fit to own a gun in America? (They both had very severe depression). Or Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, or Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes fame, etc. etc. I notice this because I have bipolar disorder and I hunt deer. When a bunch of men are standing there arguing about trespass, all holding their rifles, I am the one with the cool head and i'm the bipolar one. Maybe by nature of being male, people are a risk?

Obviously, I think a person who has been aggressive with others should't have a gun. But mental illness itself is a poor criteria, being aggressive is usually a person's personality, not the illness. So I think that even people who had been under commitment to a psychiatric hospital should have a right to own a gun, if they have been evaluated that they are no risk to others. Most people under commitment, it's because they are too depressed to feed themselves and pay their bills and stuff. They get treatment, and do a lot better. I don't think someone should lose their gun rights becasue they were starving or hid under their bed.

I think felons of non-physical type crimes (did drugs, wrote a bad check for $1000, that type of thing) should be able to get their rights back after a few years if they keep their noses clean.

I write a lot about the mental illness thing, because it is a knee jerk reaction of the public and the media to pick on a mostly defenseless group of folks who are already suffering. Most of us so-called crazy people are harmless, and most people with serious mental illness you can't even tell.

On Drew Carey's the Power of 10 game show, it came up that about 40% of americans support the right of americans to own automatic weapons. So there is a number for you.

This question is right up my alley. Every American Citizen that is of legal age, has had training in the safe handling of firearms, is not a convicted felon, or under psychiatric care, is not under a restraining order and does not have a history of violence. Should and does have the right to own any firearm they so choose. Hunters do not use 30 rd. magazines, they are restricted to 3 rounds. Let me dispell any other nonsense that may come up. Owning and being allowed to carry are two totally different things.
Same rules apply but you need to apply for the permit to carry concealed. It's not easy to obtain one, easier in some states than in others.
Let me jump off my soap box after one final point, I really like this one too because it stops the anti gunners in their tracks.
If you are that opposed to guns then put a big sign on your house, your business, your car. Lettered in big red letters " This is a gun free home!" Or business or whatever, you get the picture. When you post that sign, you let every jerk know that you can not protect yourself. Plain and simple.
Rick

Your question is not totally clear to me.

Are you suggesting that the 2nd amendment be repealed, because you don't think this is a good right to have in this day & age?

Also, this right was not "given" to American citizens, it was "won" via a bloody Revolutionary War, then reaffirmed by the War of 1812, and later conflicts.

That you have this right, you should thank soldeirs, patriots. Also that we are communicating in English, thank soldiers patriots, and maybe teachers.

There was another question I recently asked about "What is an American" and part of my answer was that all of North South and Central America are part of America, so Mexicans have as much right to call themselves Americans, as people in USA, or anywhere else in the culture of these continent's cultures.

But the 2nd amendment to the US constitution only applies to US citizens, not to all Americans. Also Congress and the Courts have interpreted what arms, and that militia means "regulated militia" not self-regulated like the white supremacists and Klu Klux Klan.

So we are not allowed to have our own personal nuclear weapons, anthrax etc. (weapons of mass destruction). Plus people convicted of serious crimes ... they also lose this right, plus people who have been found to be mentally ill.

But after deducting these various exceptions, yes most US citizens do have the right to bear certain arms, guaranteed to them by their constituion.

Absolutely YES. This right is granted to us by our Constitution so we can defend our lives, families, and properties from criminals. It is also so that we can defend ourselves from hostile invaders, if our government were to fall. The poster who mentioned banana clips and 30 round mags may want to have them if attacked by a hostile force.
9/11/2001 unfortunately showed that our government will not always be able to protect us. Those of us who have had the misfortune of being attacked by a violent criminal are glad that we had the right to defend ourselves with firearms if we choose. U.S.Supreme court has ruled that the police are not responsible for your safety, you are. This argument was successfully used in my defense when I had to shoot 2 career criminals who attempted to car jack me. (12ga #8 in the face, they now look like Freddy Crouger from Nightmare on Elm Street).
I would not say the right to keep and bear arms is the right of every American. Not convicted felons, illegal drug users, mentally insane or psychologically troubled. These need to remain excluded.

Yes. It's interesting that the same people who flip out over the Patriot Act, and the so-called theft of our civil liberties, are so quick to see an outright ban on gun ownership.

Law abiding citizens not restricted in any other way i.e., felons, restraining orders, medical condition, etc... must have the right to bear arms.

Everyone within the legal limits of the law. No hard core criminals, no crazy people nor illegal immigrant should have that right but all else, yes indeed.
