I was wondering if could plug a wireless range booster into my computer (desktop), so I could mimic a non-wireless connection. There's no way to move the computer or my actual router, sadly.

You can use a "Wireless Bridge". these are external recievers with antennas. They will pickup further than an internal card. With the removable antennas you can also add a directional antenna should you need better signal pickup.

I use these in offices quite often when the unit to be covered is marginal. They work well, are not as cheap as internal cards or USB adapters but do work much better.

The other option would be use a USB "Stick" or adapter and build or buy a "Cantenna" for it. Here are some "plans" to make one. They do work but are a little strange to mount etc.

I have a Linksys wireless -G range expander that plugs into the computer's ethernet , or set up wirelessly to bounce signals out to remote wireless devices. I also have the linksys adapter which plugs into my remote computer which picks it up... two devices but they work to get the signal to my computer. You might just need the adapter to pick it up and bring your router's signal to you. Some places have it on sale but I paid at circuit city around $175. 00 for both . Good Luck!

this is not any longer wierd in any respect. There are ports in the back of maximum instantaneous routers for in simple terms that reason: frequently a working laptop or laptop laptop is someplace close to the router, and if so, you will get your superb pass speeds over a cable extremely than by way of instantaneous. the guideline of thumb is: if a cable can attain your router truthfully, use a cable. in case you like information superhighway get right of entry to the place a cable could be complicated/imposible to apply: use instantaneous. overall performance relies on your connection velocity. If 2 desktops are utilizing the comparable connection, they're the two each and every going to be somewhat slower at information superhighway get right of entry to (besides the reality that on maximum extreme velocity connections you will no longer be conscious a element except the two desktops are downloading a extensive report and/or at a quickly pass velocity).

You can change the antenna on the wireless adapter for a booster antenna. This will boost the range for your adapter.
