Each store would have slightly different fish in their tanks, but they'll be from the same general groups: goldfish, cichlids, livebearers (guppies, mollies, platys, variatus, and swordtails), tetras, barbs, danios, rasboras, freshwater "sharks" (certain catfish and cyprinids with a shark-like body shape), catfish (corydoras, otocinclus, plecos, pims, glass catfish), angelfish, rainbowfish, loaches, gouramis, bettas, Chinese algae eaters, and some oddball species. You can try looking through the fish profiles in the following links to see if you recognize any of yours: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?pcatid=830

Any fish that captures your interest is a good pet, but I would not suggest saltwater or goldfish for beginner fishkeepers. I love goldfish and that's what I keep, but some people prefer tropicals in general or specific types of tropicals. Small tropicals are probably the easiest to keep, while saltwater and goldfish are the most difficult to keep. Bettas are one of the more "easy" fish to keep; however, that said, there is still a lot of work involved in keeping any fish and a certain level of knowledge and committment is required to successfully keep fish, just as with any pet. You ask about what the longest living fish are. Although small tropical fish only live for 2-10 years on the average, depending on the species, they are, by far, the best route for the new beginner. Goldfish can easily live 15-20 years and as much as 40 years, but, as I said, they are an extremely difficult fish to successfully keep so that they live to these long lifespans. Saltwater fish are beautiful and, once you learn about all of the ins and outs of the specific water parameters of saltwater, the keeping isn't that difficult, but then, most saltwater fish also only have that 4-12 year lifespan average. So, your intial goal should just be to learn all you can about fish and start at the beginning and the more experienced you become, the more you can start branching off into the more specific, difficult groups of fish. Good luck and have fun! Fish are beautiful and hours of interest!

If you want to know the names of the fish you bought, go to a fish forum and post clear, detailed pictures of the fish there and ask what they are. A list of names that Petsmart sells will be useless to you.

The names Petsmart use are common names not the real names. You will have better luck taking a picture to your local fish store or getting a digital picture and showing it to a forum or asking again here with it. Make sure the picture is the clearest you can get.
