My husband swears that the defroster cools the automobile just as efficiently as the air conditioner. I tried to tell him that although it might cool things down it is about 10 times less efficient. I tried to tell him that while he was living in San Diego it might have cooled things down because the temperature there hardly ever gets over 80 degrees but we live in Missouri where it quite a bit more hot and humid. I also tried to tell him that if he did not want an air conditioner why did he even buy a vehicle with an air conditioner...and how does the defroster work if there is no air conditioner?

He insists on "cooling" the vehicle with the defroster, which to me is just rediculous. Does anyone have any advice on how I can show him how rediculous it is to cool the vehicle down using a defroster in the heat of summer in Missouri?

The Defroster will cool down your automobile ONLY if the A/C is on or if the ambient temperature (outside) is Lower that the air temperature within the car.

The Derfroster works in a NON A/C car by pushing OUTSIDE air through the DEFROSTER vents.

When the defroster is on and the car has AC, the AC compressor does turn on, to remove moisture from the air that blows out.

Whether it cools the car or heats it is then dependent on what you have the temperature set for. If it's on full cold, the air coming out will be the same as what would come out of the dash vents with the AC in its normal mode, so your husband is correct in thinking that the defroster blows cold air, but that is only the case if the car has functioning AC to start with. A car without AC will not blow air any colder than what is outside.

If the car has no AC, you really need the heat set higher to dry the air and clear the windshield, but that won't work as well.

So - to summarize - if the car has AC and you turn on the defroster with the temp turned to the cold side, you are using the AC, but it's coming out the top instead of the dash. The interior of the car and the passengers will cool faster, however, if you send the cool air out the dash vents where the people are.

If your hubby thinks he's not using the AC in this mode and as a result, saving gas - he's very much mistaken.

He's right, of course, that the a/c is running when the defroster is on. The output of the cooling on defrost is 100%, and that's not the problem. It may cool the car okay, but it doesn't cool me as well, because I'd rather have the movement of that cool air on me. I think most poeple feel the same way.

To answer your question about showing him it's ridiculous, I know how my wife would do it. She doesn't have any trouble letting me know when she's not happy.

The air coming from the defroster is the same air that comes out the dash and floor vents. It's just directed to a different place. I dont see any point in cooling the windshield and you are correct that it wont cool the passenger compartment as well as if it were coming out the dash vents>

when you use the defroster it does turn on the a/c. it does this to pull the moister out of the air. so yes it will cool the car. it feels less efective because the cool air is not blowing in your face, and you can't recycle the air like it does in max a/c

sounds like an unnecessary waste of energy to me. i can't give you any better scientific reasoning but it does seem like a strange notion to me, and one that i've never heard of before in my life, most of which i've lived in very hot climates, including Hawaii. and i've had more than one boyfriend who was heavily into cars and never mentioned such a thing. i also used to listen to the car talk show "Click and Clack" all the time. nope, never heard of it.
