The answer to your question will differ from person to person as they will tell you that the one they use is the best, but that is there personal preference.
From my experience , antivirus and anti spy ware is only as good as its data base, it does not matter, which one it is, if it has not got the virus in its data base then it will not pick up that particular virus,
There are thousands of wild viruses out there; your guess to how many is as good as mine. So I think in picking any antivirus and antispyware, is down to personal choice and which one you are happy with.
I have tried out most of them, paid and free versions and they all have their good points and their bad points. The two that I would not recommend, from my experience with them are Norton and Mcafee.
My experience with Norton was that it slowed my pc down that it was like having a virus installed, and Mcafee would not work for me. I have tried True Sword, did not think much of it gets rid of 3 viruses and then you have to buy it to remove the rest. That did not impress me.
Ones that I would recommend are AVG, ZONE ALARM, + OTHERS
antivirus and spyware programs, if you are looking for a free antivirus and spyware, well I have been using these two for the last couple of month or so, on a trial by myself, and so far, they are as good as any, that I have tried, if not better, since installing them they have picked up any and all known viruses and spyware.
The spyware impressed me, when I installed a torrent tool bar, that was full of spyware it not only removed the spyware it removed the tool bar as well, which impressed me.
The two programs are AVAST HOME and SPYWARE TERMINATOR; I would recommend these two programs to protect your systems.
The first link is avast antivirus

This is the link for spyware terminator

This group is new and will be updated with new topics, on regular intervals you have to join to take advantage

Pete,
Check you've got the latest updates (especially Service Pack 2) installed, as sometimes these messages are caused by the 'messenger' service, and those can be easily disabled. If these don't help, you know you're dealing with a virus attack, and presuming it is a virus, my first question to you would be, is everything important on your PC backed up? If not, dont panic, it might not be too late!.
Create copies of all of your important files onto CD's or memory sticks, and keep them safe. If you aren't able to get the virus off your pc, then it may well start to cause major faults, and could be communicating your personal data to outside parties. Not to mention infecting other computers you are connecting to.
If AVG doesn't clean it, even with the latest updates loaded, you're likely to need to reformat, and rebuild your software. Don't panic, it's not as severe as it sounds. No-one needs to open your pc's base or anything, but you will need a fresh install of your operating system (which is probably XP from the sound of it).

I would recommend getting a 'Geek' mate to help before rebuilding your software, as you will almost certainly need the drivers for your motherboard, video card and network cards on cd's before you go ahead.

It's good to have these drivers, as rebuilding your pc can give it a new lease of life: we forget how quick our pc's were before we filled them up with nonsense.

I hope AVG does the job, it's a marvellous package, but when you go to download it, don't forget to google 'grisoft avg free download' rather than just 'avg', as there are loads of copycat sites offering inferior products.

Good luck!

Try AVAST (its free) anti virus the actual virus can be locked in a chest then deleted form your hard drive.

Run a thorough scan and when complete use a free program called Ccleaner to clean all your junk this should sort it out.

What is causing the pop-ups? Windows cannot tell if you have a trojan. It sounds very much like you have a problem with Smitfraud scamware. This tries to scare you in to buying a fake program to remove a "problem" on your computer.

Do a Google on "smitfraud removal tool" and use SmitRem or SmitfraudFix to cure your problem.

You could try an online scan at....cant remeber the address.....type 'online scan' into google...look for the result that includes the word trend

It might be a conflict between windows and another programs file.

Regardles.....go to microsoft.com and search for your operating system and type the exact message in that you recieve.....you will probably find the answer and able to resolve from there

Try another scan in Safe Mode. Also you may want to try another anti-virus scan.

You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...

While you are at it check your system for spyware/adaware.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/...... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run SuperAntiSpyware---http://www.snapfiles.com/get/SuperAntiSpyware.html

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html...
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
