I don't have the Boy Scout handbook with me. I know it's three badges to a row but I'm finding conflicting information on where the 1st row should start - 3", 4" or 6"? Please let me know the "official" word and where you found it.

Hello Inquiring Mind:

According to my copy of the Official BSA Insignia Guide, 1999--2001, page 20:

"Merit badges, required, cloth, silver border, Boy Scout, right sleeve, position 4 limited to six, merit badge sash no limit. "

It fails to state that merit badges may only be worn on long sleeve shirts, and it does not state the placement of the merit badges. Custom for the sash is that the first row starts just below the collar, and continues downward until filled, then back over the shoulder.

Some councils allow patches on the back of the sash, but I feel that it looks tacky.

Mike Walton's site is very helpful, and well documented. Take a look at http://www.mninter.net/~blkeagle/insignia.htm .

Keep on Scoutin'
