I love Stephen King. His writing is so good that you feel as though you're actually there. He's so graphic it's like you can feel what's happening.

I love W.E.B. Griffin. He writes military soap operas.
The Brotherhood of War, a 9 book series, starts off in WWII and goes past the Vietnam War. Following the same group of men and their wives.
The Corps, a 10 book (and growing) series, begins shortly before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It follows four main characters all through WWII and up into the Korean War.
The Badge of Honor, an 8 book series, is about the police force. I haven't gotten around to reading that series yet. But my wife tells me it's great.
Griffin has several other series about the military.
