Yes, it's a worthwhile book to read. People have made a big fuss over newer versions of this same story, but George Orwell's horrific view of what society can become and HAS become in some very scary ways remains the best treatment of a very serious subject.

"Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley is an excellent companion novel.

If you like Orwell, check out "Animal Farm", which is NOT a kiddie book!

Are you asking if it has literary merit? Then, yes, absolutely it's a good book.

Are you asking if you'll enjoy it? Dunno, depends. I personally like it and think it's feasibility is the creepiest part. It's a distopian novel, which isn't everyone's taste. I wouldn't exactly call it upbeat, although it is exciting.

I'd say go for it: if nothing else, it's a quick read, and you'll catch a lot of pop-references that come from it (ala "big brother" and "double plus ungood").

Orwell was a brilliant man with poor timing.

seems to me that whether or not it's a good book is based on two things: did you like it? and how famous/long-lasting is it? if you didn't like it, then it's not good to you. but it is undoubtedly famous and long-lasting. personally, i liked it and think it is a good book.
