I think forgetting is accidental if you "forget" to do something on purpose then you really aren't forgetting your just planning on not doing it.

It is my belief that forgetting is accidental. If you are preoccupied by something else, or that particular event does not have a strong connection in your mind, then it's difficult to remember. It's much easier to remember something if it has a signal in your mind. For example, there was a particular perfume my ex always wore, and whenever I smell that scent, I think of her. Also, whenever I hear about New York, or September, the event of 9/11 comes into my mind. These are things that are strongly connected, and therefore things that I have a difficult time forgetting.
If my parents mention something while I am occupied with writing, or watching tv, for example, I often forget what exactly it was that they said. However, I corrolate wednesdays with chores, and in the same way, if I'm inactive when I am told something, I remember it better.
My point is, I don't think you usually forget something on purpose. It's more of an accident, seeing as it takes the mind's connection of two or more things to hold onto a memory. We store up so many thoughts, feelings, memories, beliefs, etc in our minds, it's very easy to miss a certain thing here or there.
Our minds are like computers. Files are tucked away that we don't even know are there, until we stumble upon them. And if a file is misnamed or lost, it takes a keyword search or a very thorough combing of the system to find it. Sometimes this takes a lot of time, if you've managed to really misplace something. Our minds are the same way. So most forgetfulness isn't on purpose, it just happens.

There's that kind of "accidental forgetting" that isn't really accidental. It is caused by some brain deficiency or disfunctionality or something like that. People just forget in a snap.. like a mental block. It's never on purpose.
Then, there's this "purposeful forgetting" where people intentionally do as:
1) an excuse for their failure or moment of error.
2) a way to forgive the misgivings done against them.
3) a promising solution to setting the self free.
4) an escape from some unwanted bonds.
5) a final step to self- renewal.

This is a good question and I aim to honestly answer it! I would say accidental just like most folk but that makes it sound a haphazard sort of affair. If I do it on purpose then its either an excuse for letting some one down or I have let myself down. However I invariably do forget things unintentionally because I am merely human. So I will often tell myself "somethings are just not meant to be just now" and I accept my failing and re arrange. This of course means I also have to accept when others forget too. Accidently of course

I would rather appropriately put it this way: It was purely accidental because your mind is preoccupied of so many things. It may also be attributed because you are so busy that you tend to forget others things. You see the more we are responsible and there are so many things to think and to look after and since a lot of things are in your mind. Do this, do that until it happened what should not happened and that is -- Oh! I forgot.. As we add a year to our age it seems to me forgetting is much predominant unlike before.. However if it done in purpose -- then that is not forgetting because it is in your mind that you have to do it in purpose and that should be done.

both..we forget by accident sometimes which is human nature yet as we age the memory is not so good and is declining..we also choose to forget what we do not want..example:we choose that we have to deal with problems because we are trying to escape that..it is a 50/50 thing yet most of the times it is an accident while other times we forget on purpose..

Built in to the spirit on purpose, to let go, release.
To live in the moment is the only sane answer, so definitely, forget on purpose.
I like "seize to remember that which is over"
What do you think?

psychology say that when we forgot that because maybe we don't wanna remember because of bad memories or we do forgot because things aren't mature enough in our brain.but i surely know that the fact that we forgot is something good because we cant move on if we still live in the past.and that stop us from development and progress.i mean i know that our past is an important part in our life.and that if we don't have a past we don't have a future but we cant have all the past memorized.so some things have to be forgotten.and i mean the bad things which makes us week and incapable of move on

Sometimes when you are having problems that you cannot control, you tend to forget what you want to do, or maybe we might do it on Purpose.

I think all of us are guilty of selective memory from time to time but I do think it comes down to the individual when it comes down to how well we retain thoughts and memories. Some of us have a better ability to create those little memory synapse's than others. We're either born with it or not.
