I guess they're playing because it's only one game. Plus the European leagues are not playing this weekend because of the Euro 2008 qualifiers so they have time off from La Liga and Serie A.
It's good for the US team so they can get more experience playing against a big South American team. Also it will attract more people to watch futbol in the US.
