Do you believe you are just your body? I'm sure you don't.
Whenever you look into the eyes of your dog, do you see them as empty? I'm sure you don't.
The process of creation is always in three aspects. For us, creation is through our mind, body and spirit. Without one aspect, creation is impaired and unnatural (as what happens with feats of engineering, like robots and such).

animals have a species oversoul
all cats are cat
all roses are rose
it is different with humans
every human individual is their own species
the spirit is the Life consciousness that is adventuring in matter
the soul is the individual personality that is created in that sojourn by the individual meeting the outer life of this earth
the soul only becomes eternal when you do not go to the grave but find the way to transmute the body into something that can follow you into foreverness
but the Spirit that you were before you joined the fertilized egg is eternal
it just starts up a newborn soul with each newborn life

The Eastern notion of the soul is Consciousness. So if you are Conscious, it exists in you. And that goes for other beings as well, but as you can imagine, the consciousness of an animal is not that of a human.
Putting the human part in Western Terms.... "The Great I AM." If you want to look into it in more detail in an understandable format...

I think it does. Or I would call it a mind. When people say "Mind your own business" doesn't that suggest that we have a mind/soul/spirit?
And when you like something or hate something, isn't that your soul doing it?
And I think that dogs have a mind also. Otherwise they would not be able to do very much, like a rock or a tree that just sits there. They would not be able to know its master or the call of its name, right?

Yes. And your dog has a soul, but it doesn't have an individual sole like people do. It is part of the collective dog soul.
