we have a septic field- just emptied in May. The butler sink in the kitchen gurgles when I run water down the main sink. The toilet at the other end of the house gurgles too-all by itself. What is going on?

Since the rain has stopped- the noise has stopped as well.

You've got an air block in your drain. Somewhere there is a pocket of air in your drain system that is coming back into the house. You can put a flow valve on the main drain line going to the septic field, or, install a couple of air vents on the drain lines. I recommend the flow valve. It only allows the drainage and flow in one direction. If the air block tries to come back up the line, the valve will close. Check with the company that cleaned your septic field. Sounds like they may have caused an air pocket.

Don't forget to check the soil stack! Sometimes birds and small animals build a nest in the roof vent that causes blockage. If you have a ranch style home on a level lot, you could DIY with a long snake. Otherwise, call a professional.

On our new house, the plumbers forgot to remove the vent caps after the building inspector did a pressure test.

Vent, vent vent, any time you hear "gurgling" it is likely a plugged or missing air vent. The air vent prevents the water flow from one fixture having a sucking affect on the other traps (via the common stack). Make sure the vent is clear.

Get yourself some good old baking SODA and a gallon size white vinegar. Put a cup of the soda into the drain(s) followed by a couple of cups of the vinegar. Wait ~ 30 minutes and flush with warm water. Good drains, sweet smelling, never clog and not harmful to the environment.
