I have recently become interested in Geology, particularly the study of rocks. I understand the 3 basic rock types. What I want to know is how does one identify a rock type (Igneous, Metamorphic, Sedimentary) and then the rock (i.e. Granite, limestone, Sandstone, etc.) simply by looking at them?

This is a process. By studying rocks you learn more and more about them. Some have said that sedimentary rocks have layering, but how that is different from low-grade metamorphic foliation or volcanic ash-flow stratification is sometimes difficult for a geologist to determine. There is one igneous rock in my area that for all intents and purposes looks to be a gabbro, but it is a granite with microscopic quartz. My Structural Geology professor called it a gabbro till I told him my Petrology professor told me it was a granite. Rocks can fool even the experts.

Sedimentary usually contains layers of some sort, stratification. Igneous will have certain crystals that are common in melts, whereas metamorphic contain minerals that are deformed . . . essentially you identify the minerals that form the rock to find out its history. A basalt would not be a sedimentary mineral in general for example. A slate is metamorphic whereas a shale is sedimentary.

The Rock does not perceive as black. recognizing you have black history isn't comparable to figuring out as black. The Rock identifies because of the fact the multiracial guy he's. besides, How Tiger seems is fairly subjective element. To you, he's greater Black-looking. I, on the different hand, see an brown-skinned Thai person. besides the fact that if Tiger replaced into greater "Black-looking", the certainty of the situation is that he's blended (Black and Thai) and subsequently has an actual to declare that that's his. whilst will you and something of the society get it? How one seems isn't think to ovverride what one IS.

Once you have learned they types then it will become easy for you to identify them by looking at them. Can you look at a piece of glass or wood and know the difference? Well, rocks are the same way. Once you have seen one kind and are familiar with you then you will just know.

Same way you ID anything by looking at it. You just know from memory. So you better start studying.
