I believe it was the volcanic ash that covered them and then hardened over time, that made the stone outlines of the people....

When they were digging up Pompeii they found open spaces under the hardened Ash and Mud. Someone figured out that these spaces where made when the bodies trapped decomposed. So they decided to fill the spaces with plaster whenever they found one before they continued digging which left a plaster figure matching the death position for the original bodies.

They didn't, when the ash instantly killed the people they died in the exact positions they were in. Then the ash hardened and the organic material of their bodies decomposed it left a holow "bubble" in the ash in the shape of their body. When the archeologists found pompeii they started finding these "bubbles" and figured out what they were. Then the archeologists filled the remaining "bubbles" with plaster and allowed the plaster to harden and then removed the cast. The famous pompeii statues that you see in pictures and on tv are these plaster casts of the people made by the archeologists.

They didn't actually turn to stone... the ash from the volcano coated them and caused them to become a type of mummy. Because they were preserved in the hardened volcanic ash, they didn't decompose like they would have normally.

They didn't....their bodies were 'melted' by the hot ash that came on top of them, and that left a body shaped 'hole' inside the hardened ash....this hole was then used to make plaster casts of the bodies...which is what you have seen as the 'stone' bodies...

They were the victims of the biggest, most prolific volcanic explosion. No, they didn't actually turn to stone, the ashes from the volcano killed them instantly, so that over the millennium they were encased in their own ash.

they didn't turn to stone they were coated with hot ash and left their body and facial shapes inside the ash. their bodies were changed to gas and leaked away. by pouring something lkie plaster of paris into the cavity left by the dissolution of bodies we are able to get a good idea of what they were like.
