I assume you mean the colt 45 automatic.

First issued as a service weapon in 1911.

The US military often used the year of introduction as an indentifiying number on service items.

A very short summary:

It is a single action, semi-auto pistol created by John Browning and chambered in the .45 ACP round. It was the US military's firearm from 1911 to the 1980s. It is considered tried and true by many and is still very popular. Colt produced the first ones but later (WWI demand) other manufacturers (like Springfield Armory) began producing this type of pistol. There have been some changes over the years but essentially the basics are still the same. Some modern changes that have been made by a few manufacturers is a double action trigger, chambering it in different rounds (e.g. 9mm), and using double stacked magazines versus single stacked mags.
