I certainly hope you've read the book - it's really good and you're cheating yourself if you haven't.

BUT, the main point of the book is the struggle of the black man in America. The nameless protagonist (<- not an accident, mind you!) finds himself trapped in a world where he feels incredibly alone, mistreated, taken advantage of and, overall, invisible.
He falls victim to mental illnesses as he tries to make sense of a world that doesn't want him, though he wants to be apart of it.

Hope that helps!
