Peace!

Like the sun, the moon sometimes appears red on the horizon due to atmospheric effects, especially if there is dust or smoke in the air.
In the early morning hours of August 28th there was a total eclipse of the moon visible in the US, which made the moon appear a dark red. There will be another total lunar eclipse next February, and then none until 2010.

Which night?
If you mean August 27, that's because there was a total lunar eclipse. The moon was in Earth's shadow and only lit up by the sunlight passing through the atmosphere on either side - that sunlight would be very red (sunrises and sunsets).
If it was another night, the moon will appear reddish, orange, yellow, or even brown depending on the type and amount of smoke, dust, and pollution in the air. Small particles in the atmosphere will cause the moonlight to appear more red than normal.

It was a lunar eclipse. It was super cool, I went out and saw it around 3:30. It happens when the earth comes between the sun and the moon, and the earth casts its shadow on the moon. The reason it's red is because the earth's atmosphere scatters light so the result is a red shadow, not a black one.

Swamy is right. The moon does not emit light. It reflects it off the sun. The amount of particles in the atmosphere causes the differences in which color ray you see reflected. Last night you saw the red light so the moon appeared red.

The sun that has hit the Moon also passed through the earth's atmosphere. This allows more red light to get through ,like a filter.

Changes in our atmosphere result in changes in scattering of different colors differently and thus may result in the moon or other light emitting bodies colored. In the case of moon, the reflected sunlight normally appears white but if the scattering is more, blue gets absorbed and reddish hue shows through.

I don't know what causes it, but it is called a Blood Moon, and usually happens once a year.
