You can't simply burn any file type to a dvd and expect it to play in a standard dvd player. From what you said, I'm assuming that you want to burn files that you downloaded off of the internet to a cd. The type that you should get is called an avi file. Once you have the movie file, you will need a dvd authoring program. I like to use TMPGENC DVD author 3. You basically open up that program, use that program to open up the avi file(s), and do an output. Once the output is done, you will have the launch the dvd writing tool (part of that program) put a dvd into your burner (that is compatible with your burner of course), and allow the files to burn to the dvd. The output process takes a few hours, depending on how powerful your pc is. Make sure that you don't have any other programs running while you are doing the output or the burning or else your copy will get screwed up. TMPGENC is not a free program. However, you can always pirate a copy from the file sharing service bitorrent. If you decide to get bitorrent, I recommend that you get the utorrent client. If you need any more info on dvd burning, send me an email at skrzypczak1990@gmail.com. I hope that helps.

U need a DVD Authoring program like "DVD factory" that converts video files to DVD compliant MPG2 files, then recodes them to form the VIDEO_TS folder with .VOB files as main files, plus the .IFO and others to direct the system

Nero can also do it if you have a retail build with Nero Vision Express
