Why are the Midlands UK called the Black Country?

I have my own theories but I'm probably wrong

During the Industrial Revolution it was the centre for heavy industry and the smoke and soot made everything (even the air) black.

in the industrial revolution there was so much soot and carbon from the coal that it turned everything black - the sky . It is clean today as there is little coal burning etc ...
