They'll eat the patio off the back of your home. About the only thing that helps is an electric fence.

I have no idea, I've never seen them :P.

It is possible, especially if you are in an area where the deer are used to people. Rabbits are another possibility. Critters naturally dislike the sight, sound, and smell of people, so try going out on your patio a little more often. You could also ask a hair salon for some hair clippings and sprinkle them around the perimeter of your yard. This'll only work for about a week though.

We have lots of deer and 12 acres of garden and plants.
An eight foot fence keeps them out of the garden. This year we had plants come up voluntarily out of the garden and the deer started eating them. We got a big bottle of cayenne pepper and dusted them real good. The deer quit eating them. See if that helps. We tried human hair, dog hair and blood meal. They seem to get use to that stuff. Good luck.

Not much you can do about deer. Some gardeners have had success with predator urine that you buy from pet stores or on the internet.
