What European nation claimed the land to the west and north of the English colonies?

I am not sure about this one, something is telling me North America or England...honestly, I am stumped.

Thank you to all who respond.

to the north and west of the english colonies could beCanada or the Arctic so the answer would be Great Britain.

However if you think of Canada as the English Colonies, it could be Alaska which would be Russia who first claimed it when they went over the Berring Strait.

Depends on the definition of the English Colonies.

France, and eventually Great Britian defeated France and claimed the area now known as Canada, and the US bought the west.
