John Adams biography that by David McCollum was good. Not of course a page turner, but gave you so much history about the start of our nation, what Adams went through for this country, all the stuff I probably learned in school but forgot and then some.

Not much on the war itself, but all the discord in the states, how they got the financing, all the diplomacy involved. amazing it all worked out.

An Ordinary Man, by Paul Rusesabagina. It's a true account of the civil war and genocide that occured in Rwanda in 1994. It's only about 200 pages, pretty easy to read, and the most AMAZING story you will ever read, I guarantee it.

Try almost any of the novels written by Charles Dickens.

Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, The Old Curiosity Shop, Great Expectations, etc., etc,. Whilst they are all good stories they are all historical comments also.

Go to Amazon.com and put in "Dummies" or "Idiot's Guide". Then you'll have the option on the left to look at particular subjects. You'll be able to look at the table of contents and an excerpt of many of them-just click "search inside this book". When you find one that appeals to you go to half.com and see if you can get it cheap.

No kidding, the Dummies and Idiot's Guides are light, easy to read, even entertaining, and packed with information.

Anything by Phillipa Gregory or Margaret George.
They are both great historical writers.
Mary Queen of Scots is a favourite of mine by Margaret George.

I know you don't want heavy...but everyone should read Dee Brown's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, real American history that does not get the attention it deserves in schools.
