There is not only life out there... there are millions perhaps billions of life supporting planets existing in the Cosmos. Why so? It is for the simple reason that the moment big bang explosion occurred... everything went haywire in the Cosmos in a spherical split! Most solar systems... that developed during the time of our solar system would have life supporting planets.

Like the surface of the balloon... as we blow the balloon... the surface area increases! But whatever exists on the outer surface always remains in the periphery only. Whatever galaxies, stars and planets existed in the peripheral belt of our solar system would have life inhibiting attributes!

It is not a miracle that life exists in other parts of the Cosmos. It was destined to be by God Almighty! But no two life forms in the cosmic system are supposed to meet each other. What if the highest manifest stage of life on an alien planet is the form of a cobra! How would we distinguish between alien creatures visiting us and those infesting our planet!

We human beings indeed inhabit a small planet! Yet, human form is the highest manifest stage in the cosmic life cycle! Only as a human being one gains enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha). Only as a human being one becomes Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed... an enlightened one!

Our soul atman within manifests a series of 8.4 million bodies on Mother Earth before it liberates itself from the cycle of birth and death. The moment human beings reach the end of cosmic life... the 8.4 million manifestation... all is over for the soul atman within! One finally gains entry into the abode of God!

Having regained its original pure pristine form... the soul atman reaches the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism)... a point of no return! Life in human form is the richest experience in the life cycle of the soul atman within. More on Life and cosmos - http://www.godrealized.org/truce_with_my_inner_self.html

Almost definately. Infact we may know the answer to that question fairly soon as there are telescopes now which are searching for planets in outher solarsystems and they can tell which types of gasses these planets have. If they descover a planet with co2 there has to be plant life on them which means the air is breathable and also means there is water.

Katie,
Your very ability to ponder the question belies your assumption of "puniness", as it is this very ability to ponder and question the magnitude of the universe, that lends "meaning" to the universe in the first place.
Without YOUR ability to think about such things, the universe and life within it would be rendered meaningless.
You are life.
You are the universe.
Hardly "puny", don't you imagine?
IMAGINE !

It is not yet a fact that life exists other than on the Earth.

It is a theory based on 'a priori' reasoning that life should exist elsewhere, but as of yet it has not yet been proven: unless the government is holding out on us about what the Viking missions to Mars in 1976 discovered.

I am one of the many searchers using the SETI at home project to find intelligent life. It's almost certain that there's non-intelligent life SOMEWHERE in the universe. As for intelligent life, that's hard to find even here on Earth.
