Ignore them, tell that person to go away and leave you alone, do not speak to this person, avoid this person.

If the person is one you consider a friend, I would try to approach the subject with them in a non-threatening, non- blaming way. Remember to use 'I' statments and express it as a feeling rather than a thought. People will often try to talk you out of your way of thinking but it is more difficult for them to deny your feelings about something.

Consider the source. Is this person one who suffers from low self esteem? You could let them know all the things that you admire about them, thus diffusing their competetive nature a bit and help them recognize that they have strengths and attributes you admire. Sounds like this person doesn't have much sense of their own value.

If discussing this in a non-confrontational way does not work and that person continues with their behavior I would consider distancing myself from that person as best I could. They have some growing up they need to do and you are better off surrounding yourself with postive and mature persons who feel good about themself and are joyous for you when things go well in your life.

My own experience was different than you are describing, but had the same flavor. A friend and I had got dressed up to go somewhere. I felt really confident until I saw her. I told her in all honesty, "Anna, I don't want to go now. I feel self conscious about myself. I just think everyone is going to think that you are naturally pretty and I have to try too hard."

And she replied, "Oh, I was feeling the same way when I saw you. Your hair is done, your makeup is perfect and you look so elegant, I always feel like biker trash next to you."

We laughed about it. I never knew she felt that way! And it cleared the air between us and strenghtend our friendship.
