I thought it takes 2 to 3 years to Mars and another 2 to 3 years to return. So in total it will take 4 to 6 years to complete the journey.
Where did you get this 1 year journey?

A laptop computer stuffed with things to keep my mind occupied for a year. (DVD's downloaded, favorite books downloaded)
Rubberband-type exercise devices to keep my body toned.
A significant family momento (a picture, ring, etc..) to revive memories of those closest to me.

Assuming that the trip already consists of foods and supplies, I would have to bring some paper and pen to write my poetry, and thoughts. and pictures of my family and friends. and my boyfriend.
