A new off-Broadway musical, "Walmartopia," is packing audiences in New York. With entertainment and corporations going hand-in-hand (children's cartoons and cartoon products being a prime example), it seems inevitable.
Surprising, though, is the fact that the theater production is anti-Wal-Mart.

I know nothing about it, but the title sounds very "let's make fun of middle America," doesn't it? At least it does have potential to be funny. Who knows?

There have been other anti-Wal~Mart "productions". There was a song that caused Wal~Mart to ban the artist's record from the store because it mentioned buying a gun at Wal~Mart. Maybe someone else will remember the artist and the song. I suppose the impact of the show packing in audiences will be a statement. Maybe it will start a trend of market bashing.

Since it is an anti-Walmart musical, I don't see this as entertainment and corporations going hand-in-hand. I see it as a political satire.
As it says on their website: Walmartopia is a satire that is not endorsed, sponsored or otherwise affiliated with, in any way, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. or any affiliates of Wal-Mart Stores

You are right about it being only a matter of time. I would like to see the musical.
Finally, anti-Walmart. I do a lot of shopping there myself but it has put so many Mom and Pop stores out of business and it saddens me. The employees of Walmart are always grumbling about the way they are treated, and we still flock to Wal-mart. I bet the show is funny. We (my family) call it Wallyworld.

Off-Broadway is known for its quirkiness. A few years ago they had a musical about Charles Manson and his crew of killers called "Charlie". Apparently the razor-wielding Sweeney Todd wasn't gory enough as a topic for a musical.

I suppose.
Maybe, now that Matt Groening has come out with a
movie of "The Simpsons", he'll try staging a Broadway
production of Springfield's equivalent to WalMart; well,
sort of.
You've heard of "Pic 'n' Save"? Well, in Springfield,
Homer & Marge shop at a store called "Try 'n' Save" !

Is it surprising?
I suspect that the average New York theatre goer is pretty much anti-corporation.

I hadn't heard about it. In my neck of the woods, everyone shops at Walmart because we have a superstore here. I always see a few neighbors at that store, I see them more there than I do in the neighborhood!...
