In ethical and moral systems, there are punishments for violations.

For example, Hitler believed that Jews did something wrong. He went about punishing them through extermination.

The terrorists believed that the US did something wrong. They went about punishing the West through bombings and plane crashes.

The US believed that the terrorists did something wrong. They went about punishing the terrorists through a long war.

Are ethical and moral systems antithetical to world peace?

neophyte...that avoids the question.

Westerners on holy lands is an question of ethics and morality. A response to a violation of one's moral code might be called revenge, but it still related to one's moral and ethical code.

You get it all wrong. You are mixing theory with implementation. Ethics and morality form the core of community... humanity as of today! In absence of ethics and morality... the present form of community would crumble. There is nothing wrong in preaching ethics and morality. To follow or not to follow is the sole prerogative of every human being!

Most human beings riding on the waves of wanton desires and materialistic riches do not follow the teachings of ethics and morality in life. The outcome... patience, persistence, perseverance and forgiveness that gives humanity its inherent meaning seems absent! Devoid of the power of forgiveness most human beings behave like animals today!

The problem lay not in the theory... not in the doctrine of ethics and morality. It is when humanity succumbing to the pressure of ego fails to exercise the requisite standards of ethics and morality... problems arise! The treatment meted out to Jews by Hitler was wrong. To forgive or not to forgive is purely a matter of choice that Jews need or need not practice!

In the whole cosmic system duality exists from times immemorial. For each and every action we have an equal and opposite reaction. The reaction can be limited provided one forgives... what if damage control exercise fails! If USA has faulted in Afghanistan and Iraq... it is their doing! They may or may not suffer on this account!

If WTC happened... it was all a doing of CIA and the government of USA. The atrocities on the innocent people always have its repercussions. This is how balance in the cosmic system is maintained. In most cases the government of USA has faltered. There is bound to be equal and opposite reaction. Why blame Islamists alone!

We are presently passing through the Kali Yuga phase of life when clock rings 4 a.m. in the morning. A time to do or die has arrived! None in the situation can help. Faith amongst people at its lowest ebb... adharma (lawlessness) has become the order of the day. To revive Dharma (righteousness) people await coming of Bhagwan Kalki... an Avatar of the era (God manifest in human form)!

Kali Yuga (the metal age) is that period in the history of mankind when relationships amongst individuals almost fail! Not only individuals but communities and nations alike! A fight to the finish between Christianity and Islamic Dharma is expected around 2012! To expect peace, ethics and morality in public life is living in dreams!

Beyond 2014 is the dawn of a new era... the golden period! Ethics and morality would become the order of the day during the golden period! A pot of gold found lying in the backyard would not have a claimant! It is this period when clock rings 6 a.m. in the morning! Everything in the cosmic system moves full circle! If we had no morals or ethics, we'd have soo much more war.

Like on a smaller scale, you wouldn't be able to buy anything, because someone would be sure to rip you off, you wouldn't be able to walk down the street, 'cos someone's going to jump you.
Morals and Ethics hold our society together. If we didn't have any, think of all the other peaceful countries, like France for example, that has nukes, but doesn't randomly attack people with them.

Anyway Hitler, the terrorists and the US, didn't simply attack people to "punish" them. Hitler, eliminated one of the richest cultural groups of his time, he got people to walk in and take their money.

And Iraq has oil. Things aren't always so black and white.

Edit: Response to the dude who posted below me, First of all: "Asama" is spelled "Osama" and the US is currently in a deficit of about 9 trillion and is increasing by 1.47 billion a day. And that's because of the war, without even counting the the cost of lives. So yea...guess who's really being "punished". You. (I'm Canadian :P)

And you're not win the war, btw...how do you fight a war on terrorism? It's not a country. People have been comparing it to Vietnam for a while now

Ethics and morals are nothing more than personal beliefs. We have problems in this world now because rather than live by the rules or policies in place, we live by someone else's morals or ethics.
Policies and rules are selectively enforced according to the person given the ability to enforce them. Rather than be fair and non disparate, it is what we have or who we know that governs punishment.
You will always have someone who steps out of the circle. Our government for example tends to interfere by using what they believe to be the proper way of doing things or believing. How is that ethical or moral, to remove the freedom of choice or religion or speech because the president feels in his own character that it is wrong?
What is right is right, what is wrong is wrong. Humans have the ability to interpret this concept but it is when leaders begin to include their personal feelings and beliefs that there becomes a problem.
Religion has the nerve to preach the word and how God loves all men yet they lead us to believe that God loves anyone as long as they believe in their religion or does as they believe things should be done or live the way they believe life should be lived.
Law has become so blatantly selective depending on who you know or what you have or where you stand in society.
We have gotten away from actual human morals and ethics and have placed too much of our personal beliefs into enterpretting the laws, the policies etc.
Government needs to stick to the rules, people need to accep responsibility... that's all there is to it.

No wonder America is seen as a major threat to world peace. North Korea may be scary but even with its nuclear weapons its a boy scout compared to America. What is the only country that has ever purposely bombed a civilian population with a nuclear weapon? Since the Cold War America has had enough nuclear weapons to end human life, more nukes than any country (except Russia). Who's going to stop a pissed off American General or for that matter Geroge Bush? I don't see any men of character in positions of power in the American government. The decision to go to war on the grounds of "Weapons of Mass Destruction" has only decreased my faith in the American government.

Ethics are just opinions. Differing ethics are the end to world peace. If the day ever comes when we can all agree on one system of ethical laws, then peace might happen.

Ethics and peace are mutually exclusive.
World peace has never nor will it ever exist.
Ethics do exist and it is the responsibility of every individual to be ethical.

Also to be peaceful for his/her part.

Defending ones self does not violate the peace.

It is no way that ethic will win the war on terrorism. The only way to beat them is on their turf. To take the fight to them. The US is doing nothing wrong. We are taking the fight to them. Its working old Asama is running scared, you can tell from his last video! We are winning and we better not let up. Just keep on fighting, no pullback! I did not vote for president Bush bot I do agree with him. If he did not do that we would have seen more attacks on our soil. The majority in congress needs a good history lesion!

I am not sure than any of your examples had anything to do with ethics. These responses were more about revenge.
