I suggest staying near where you need to be.
If you stay by the airport that means you need to be in that vicinity of chester or chichester or delaware. If you need to stay in the CITY you need to stay in center city (the heart of philadelphia) I suggest staying in places like the Hyatt or anything that isnt a motel.
You will thank me on this suggestion later.
If you stay in small hotels it will be cramped and you will hear LOUD people walking around on the streets at night, meaning you wont get sleep unless you are used to the noise.
It is worth the extra cash to stay somewhere nice

If you're looking for something thats self catering,then try the Extended Stay America - Philadelphia Airport hotel.
I always stay there when i come over from the UK.
It's basically like an efficiency apartment and prices range from $59 to $79 a night (seasonal).
Each room has a small kitchen with hob,toaster,coffee machine,fridge freezer and microwave,bathroom and king/queen/2 single beds. Plus,there is also on-site laundry.

Try the Hyatt on Deleware Ave. I've stayed there a few times. It's a very nice and clean hotel. With an excellent location.
