well I could go into the whole biological reason behind this but that's not the question.
The reason is psychological which is indicated by the fact that with the correct mental attitude you can overcome it. Most people will experience this unconsciously, and i can't claim to know the exact reason why, but I believe it is to do with basically not wanting to breath on someone. We wouldn't want people breathing in our faces and therefore we try to avoid doing it to others.

Only on that really rare occasion where ive been extremely offended by what someones done to me or a loved one..
I dont get violent but I get really mad and like no other, .. I tell'm like it really is in truth.

And then of course if someone suddenly did something to make me feel good, the aftermath of my shock is usually a really deep breath.

Stinky customers.

I'm a reference librarian in a large metropolitan library, and we have a sizable portion of our clientele who haven't bathed in days, if not weeks, and even longer since they washed their clothes.

Imagine the smell of old axle grease combined with sweat, rancid urine, vomit, and butt... that'll stop nearly anyone's breathing!

This isn't a typical symtpomn of claustrophobia - claustrophobia is when you feel the fear that you won't be able to escape an enclosed space. Maybe you're sensitive regarding personal space.
