A #6 trim head screw will go right thru most carpeting without damaging it.
Just run a screw into the tread, wherever you have a squeak, and sink it to below the carpet. Give the carpet a slight tug, and it will pull right over the screw head.
Your stair tread is most likely about an inch thick, so any screw over 2" would be sufficient.
Here is a pic of the type of screw I mentioned... you can find them at most hardware stores (I prefer the square heads myself, but a phillips would work too)

You can get a hand-held device from Home depot or any hardware store, I forget the name of it, it costs about $20, it can be placed at the point of the squeak and used on the surface of the carpet. Someone from Home Depot or another hardware store could help you with more info about the product.

sorry but the only option is to either pull up the carpet or take down the sheet rock ,,the best is the sheet rock then insert wood shims behind the risers that will tighten them up and stop most of the squeaks ,,,a little wd40 from the underside will also help with thoes you can tighten

put a few 3" trim head wood screws in each tread that squeeks. Just go through the carpeting into the stringer. The stringer is hidden unless the under side of the stairs are open.
