It's really not known. In string theory, it's possible to get all sorts of macroscopic time and space dimensions, up to 11 in all, with the rest curled up into a tiny ball. It has been suggested that all sorts of universes with all sorts of dimension numbers exists, only only those with 3 space and 1 time can produce the sorts of molecular reactions that evolve life. So, if there were more or less in our universe, someone in another universe would be asking such questions instead of us, because we wouldn't be here.

because our brain can percieve 3 spatial dimensions that are perpendicular to eachother. and those dimensions are moving through time, so time is the 4th dimension...
