The heart feels the emotional responses because of the hormones released by brain. Brain itself cannot feel anything and it is the various organs of the body that respond to chemical changes of brain.

So, hormonal signals affect the heart, though they originate in the brain or in the autonomic nervous system. When we feel sad, our chest feels heavy since we don't breathe deep enough and the oxygen deprivation affects the heart and chest.

Swamy said a good point, I think. I have related theories. As already mentioned, the chemical reactions resulting from the different psychological stimuli, take place place into your brain. During these reactions, I assume, if not mistaken, that chemicals such as Adrenaline might be released into your blood, which has an effect over probably many organs in your body, and most probably your heart starts beating faster because of that. And we, as passionate and loving humanbeings, are probably not aware of the pouring of Adrenaline through our vains, but just the obvious effects, and as dummy lovers, we can only tell we are in love when our hearts start beating faster.
This, again, is only my theory!

Precious one, the body is wired much like the house in which you live. In the vicinity of the chest-heart area are sensory nerve endings that allow us to feel much the same as taste buds allow us to taste. Both are controlled in the brains. You are right, the physical heart is a non feeling organ. Because of the generalized area from which we feel what we feel, we often say it comes from the heart. Even the word of God called that area, the heart. "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh." We know that the physical heart does not have memory. All memories, feelings and emotions are recorded or wired from the brain.

Tradition. They used to believe that the heart was a very delicate organ that did what we now know the brain does. (except the Aztecs, I suppose).

We also "learn things by heart", "know in our hearts"

In fact surgeons were warned that the slightest touch on the heart could kill.
