You are posing a very big IF. That taken for granted howver, I think Bush would have shown his incompetence much sooner had 9/11 not occurred. A good example is his lackluster performance duting Katrina and his failed so-called "tax-cut".

Your question reveals that you are one of the many people who do not realize that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 (read the bipartisan 9/11 commission report for further information).
If 9/11 had not occurred, we'd still be in the war, because Bush would have still made up the WMD story and gone into Iraq regardless of what the international community had to say about it.
And you're right. Nobody wants their soldiers to die. The fact that they are dying in support of a lie makes it even worse.

Check out this chart.
http://www.hist.umn.edu/~ruggles/Approval.htm
Bush's ratings have gone downward just about every day he's been in office, from the very start of his presidency, except for right after 9/11, right after starting the war in Iraq, and after Saddam was caught. If it wasn't for those things, Bush would have been a very unpopular president almost from his first day in office.
I think Bush made a big mistake from the very start. Personall I don't think he was even legitimately elected. But assuming he was, he was elected in the closest election in American history (in fact the TWO closest elections in history). He just barely squeaked by. But from his first day in office he acted as if he'd been elected by a huge mandate.
When you get into office on a minority of the popular vote, your first job is to win over some of the people who voted against you. You can't be president with less than half the American people behind you. Bush promised to be president of ALL the American people but he immediately made it clear that he wasn't going to do this. That's why his popularity began declining right away, as soon as he got into office.
The chart shows that the war hasn't really hurt Bush's popularity! He wouldn't have had a chance in hell of a second term if not for the war!

He would have found some other reason to go to war against Saddam Hussein. You realize that WMD and/or oil were not the real reason for the Iraq war don't you?
In discussing the threat posed by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Bush said: "After all, this is the guy who tried to kill my dad."

President Bush started with a good agenda but it has been undermined by 9/11 happenings. His initial efforts of striking hard on International terrorists ,particularly the perpetrators of 9/11 should have been taken to its logical conclusion. Unfortunately it took the turn of waging war on Iraq and entire progress in both domestic Agenda and liquidating terrorism got bogged down.
Saddam Hussein was definitely not allowing International Terrorists taking shelter in Iraq which he was ruling with an iron grip.

Bush's poll numbers were dropping between his inauguration and 9/11. They spiked right after the attacks. It wasn't necessarily because of anything he did. Any president at a time like that would have surge in popularity.

The Talabon started plotting the attacks way back when Georgie-Boy was only nominated. So ya see, he is responsible.......we were already "sitting ducks" . He's not very phuckin' well liked . He cost us a lot of money . He's a failure On any other job site, he would have been fired after just a fewe days on the job .
Oh yeah, one more thing.......he cheated in the 1st election .

FYI; the only reason Bush has any following at all is because of the war. Only the war mongers are the ones supporting him now.

I think that had 911 not happened and we didn't go to war...he wouldn't have been re-elected. The people just won't vote someone new in when there is such instability in the world.

I think if he would have followed Clinton's procedure of talking mean and shaking a fist at the bad guys, the liberals would have been okay with that. It's okay for terrorist to kill American on US soil and around the world if they don't have to get off their dead asses and do anything.
