..any suggestions as to why, and how to fix? And does Auto Zone really have a free electrical system check?

excellent answers; thank you all. FYI, I replaced the battery, as well as the spark plugs, an oil and filter change, new air filter and some EGR-system hoses because of their condition (turns out the seller had bought the Jeep at an auction and sold it to me the next day...overall, it was in good-enough shape for me to buy it: brakes, lites, A/C and heat, shocks, tires were all good). Yes, I suspected the alternator. Again, thank you all!!!

I had the same thing happen to mine it turned out to be the alternator diodes in the alternator that become worn out and was in need of replacement. Those diodes put the charge back into your battery. You may need a alternator that put out 110 amp but the cost wasnt bad it only ran 90.00 for another one to replace the original that was in there for a long time when I got my jeep. But I replaced both anyway and cured the problem.

when the red battery light comes on, there is a problem some ware on your altornator, not the battery.
The out put of the alt, is not the problem, it is because, power to the alt's field has dissapeared. No field, No exitation in the stator, meaning, no out put of the alt.
As for the system check, I never had them do one.
with your engine running, take a screw driver and see if there is magnetic attraction, to the side of your alt. If there is, thats good. put a tester on it, and see if you get 14.5 max if so, thats good.
With engine still running, take the negitive cable off the negative battery post. expect some sparking. if engine quits replace the alt, if it stays running, start turning stuff on. If the alt. is good, it will support all electrical needs, with out shutting down

You know what, in my entire life (and that is a very long time) I have never had a battery light that meant the battery is bad. It comes on when the alternator or (from the yesteryears) the generator has failed, yes it could be the regulator or the wiring to it but never, ever is it the battery.

It may be your alternator. A simple test you can do your self, is loosen the positive battery cable, start the jeep up, and pull the positive cable off while its running. If it dies then your alternator is bad. If it keeps running , then your alternator is fine, and the problem is somewhere else. Possibly in the starter cellinoid. But try that simple check first.

Yes to second part. They are limited in giving the computer dump as compared to a dealer doing an $85 diagnosis, but may turn up something for you. When you say battery light is on, may indicate that your alternator is not working and the battery is ok.

it is an alternator problem. start the car and check your voltage at the battery, should be close to 14volts. a know problem on those is the big wire that goes to the alternator. if you don't have 14 volts at the battery when it is running then check the volts on the big wire at the alternator. if it is 14 volts then its the wire, if it is the same as the battery then it is the alternator

No, there is no way that you can install solar panel in your truck battery. For your information, solar panel works only if it is stable mode and consuming solar energy. So, think about it, does your moving truck can give what a solar panel need to run it.
