How did air cooling work?

If you're talking about air conditioning versus something like a water cooler or swamp cooler, then the primary difference is the coolant. In swamp coolers, the coolant is water; in air conditioners today, freon (or a replacement, now that freon isn't allowed any more) is the coolant; it's much more efficient than water, and works in much more humid environments. The use of a compressor in today's air conditioners to increase the unit's ability to cool is the other big different; swamp coolers didn't (and don't) use them at all.
