I agree with those who've suggested trying whatever plant you found the caterpillar on, and spraying a bit of water, but let me add this:
Often when people find caterpillars "just wandering around on the ground" it is when they are looking for a place to shed their skin and turn into a pupa. (The stage between caterpillar and butterfly, otherwise called "chrystalis" or "cocoon".) Some moths/butterflies overwinter in this state, while for others it will only last a week or so.
If your caterpillar is at this stage it will not eat anything, and will just look for a place to transform. Give it a stick and some leaves, or it might try to make a cocoon on top of the jar (could be a problem later on), keep the jar in a cool, moist place until it "hatches".

Different caterpillars eat different things, but for the most part they eat leaves. orange, yellow and white striped caterpillars are monarch butterfly caterpillars, they eat milkweed leaves and if you put a fine mist of water on a leaf, they will be able to drink the tiny droplets. I dont know about any other types of caterpillars, but i would google the markings of the caterpillar and see if you can figure out what kinds of leaves they eat. Be cautious, some leaves may be poisonous to the caterpillar. If you found it on a plant, check the plant for leaf damage. It may be something that caterpillar can eat.

Caterpillars don t really drink a lot of water, however, it could drink a few droplets but they would prefer the need of the nutritious drink/water inside the plant or leaf. They could also feed on the nectar of plants with flowers

It depends on the type of caterpillar it is. Each different kind eats a different type of leaf from the trees. Try bringing in a variety of DIFFERENT KINDS OF LEAVES, and WET them. They drink the water from the leaves. Also, bring CLOVER and some GRASS. Depending on the type they are, they may prefer this to leaves.

Wherever you found it was on the kind of leaves it prefers to eat. Collect some of them and sprinkle them with water to keep them moist and to satisfy the need for drinking water.
Just grass will not do them any good - they all specialize in specific leaves.

Caterpillars are the larval form of butterflies and moths. They are mostly herbivorous, eating plant leaves, grass, bark and seeds.
