You use to the powers of (often called indices or orders) when you wish to shorten something like 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 to 5^4 (^ meaning to the power of)

2^1 =2
2^5 = 32

We can work this out because
2 = 2
2x2=4
2x2x2=8
2x2x2x2=16
2x2x2x2x2=32
