I'm not talking about a dual layer dvd-r or dvd+r. I'm talking about a double sided blank dvd-r or dvd+r that has the standard 4.7 gigs of space of each side or whatever. I'm trying to look online and buy them but I can't find them anywhere. :-(

They are all double sided, no different than a floppy. It is the drive that has one or two heads that makes the difference as to how you can write to the medium.

no, it's a physical reason why:

when a dvd burner "burns a disk" it actually shoots a laser at the reflective film inbetween the layers of plastic on the blamk dvd leaving an impression in the layer. if it were to do this from both sides it would need a third layer of plastic to seperate the two layers of reflective material which would make the disk too heavy and damage most dvd players.

copywrited dvd's can be double sided because they are not "burned with a laser" but rather stamped just like a rubber stamp on paper, thus leaving no impressions on either side of the disk. Also because they are stamped and not burnt, they can hold 6.3 gigs of information per side as opposed to the 4.7 gigs that a dvd-r +r can hold.
