This from today's (9/9/07) NY Times Magazine:
There are at least 1/2 doz reasons that a lot of political prognosticators, including many inside his own party, will tell you that Rudolph Giuliani will never be the Republican nominee for president, no matter what the polls say. They are, in no particular order:
1. As NY mayor, he was pro-choice, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights.
2. He has demonstrated an odd propensity over the years of publicly dressing up in women's clothing, proof of which is now readily available online, including a disturbing clip of Donald Trump nuzzling thr mayor's bosom.
3. He once endorsed Mario Cuomo for governor.
4. Once while mayor he holed up for months at the apartment of a gay couple who were close friends of his. Try explaining that one at Bob Jones University.
5. He has divorced 2 times; the last time he broke the news to his family on national television. His 2 children don't seem inclined to vote for him, let alone nominate him for father of the year.
6. Presidential politics.......

Well, he doesn't have a chance to capture the Republican nomination for all of those reasons and more.

Basically, if it went to a general election and skipped the primaries, Rudy would have a great shot. But, the people that vote in the GOP primaries are their own breed. They are known as supervoters and nothing escapes them. they could give you quotes with dates and times of statements made by a candidate that they found offensive. Also, most states have closed primary voting meaning only registered Republicans can vote in the primary. again, these are the diehards who vote on guns, God and gays....Rudy is weak in all three categories. He also said McCain, a RINO who is despised by the hard core GOP base/primary voter, would be his choice if he weren't running alongside him,.

Look, there are only so many things a candidate can overcome. Rudy is pro gun control, pro choice to the point he is on record as having said he is even for partial birth abortions at tax payers expense, he marched in gay pride parades, was married to his cousin, dumped the mother of his kids via apress conference....he will never make it and anyone who thinks he can get the nomination is just poorly informed as to how the whole process works.
He polls well nationally cause at this point, it is still name recognition.
He has NO chance whatsoever,

He is running on a law and order platform. That did work in New York for a while. Prior to 9/11, he was really sinking in popularity among New Yorkers. His only real achievement after 9/11 was to be the mayor at the time doing a mayor's job. It is debatable whether or not he was actually doing the job well. There is no similar incident to really draw a comparison to. His record doesn't really stand up under even cursory scrutiny.

Giuliani's nomination by Republican party means handing over victory to Hillary Clinton on a platter. But do they have real choice after all that has happened to the party's credibility for not being able to control the course of events in the progress of Iraq War and its follow up. From now to November 04,2008 greater decline in prestige of the party is bound to happen unless some thing very dramatic like the live capture of Osama and his close aids materializes.
America has to extricate itself from the present no - win situation.

Forget all of that nonsense. If Hillary wins the Democratic nomination, the last and I mean the LAST person she wants to oppose in a one on one race is Rudy. If she faces him in a debate, he will destroy her. Plain and simple. New Yorkers LOVE the guy. The only reason Mike Bloomberg is being held in the wings to run as a third party spoiler is Rudy. Can you imagine the disaster if Hillary does not carry New York in the Election? Her (so called) home State? The biggest block of Democratic voters in New York State are the Liberal Manhattan crowd. They live with the memory and scars of 9/11 every day. They wanted to elect Rudy for a third term as Mayor. While Hillary did win as Senator in New York, that was primarily a party line vote. There is no great love for Hillary in New York. There is real and genuine love for Rudy. Merry Christmas! .

And we all know that the New York times is a "independent" newspaper with no reason to get involved in politics, or talk bad about the only guy who has a darn good chance to beat Hillary. Yea, that's it.

This is all political rhetoric. It's just like the liberal whackos that were screaming about how Bush drank alot 20 years ago or did cocaine once so he's a drunk and a drug dealer now. People aren't perfect and the average American knows this.

As a conservative, I don't like him either, but he will be a LOT less damaging to the country than if Hilllary got elected.

Giuliani actually isn't that smart. Neither is Fred Thompson, The only viable candidates running on the Neocon stage are Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney. I completely disagree with both of them, but they're not stupid.

7) He was walking the streets of NYC during 9/11 because he put his control station inside a known TARGET.
8) He is a one trick pony, and is using 9/11 for personal and political gain.

might not get the votes of the social cons but people tend to vote rep to protect the size of their wallets.

I think the moderates will prosper in the elections and Giuliani tends to be a little more liberal on some issues.

He is for open borders and illegals in the country. He has recently flip flopped and said to close the borders but not remove the illegals.

The republican party is in shambles...I would hope they finally push Ron Paul as a front runner.

Rudy will win the Republican nomination, but he is not strong enough to defeat Hillary Clinton.

She beat him in the U.S. Senate race, and she will beat him again.
