This American at least spent a year in a non-English speaking country, and was amazed at the number of middle aged people who told me that they had never actually had a conversation with an American before, because they had never before met one who could speak German.

I also got to see the more typical American tourists who, when it seems that the waiter doesn't understand English, just start shouting (in English).

And I apologize for my countryman who wrote all that about your letters being backwards. He's just afraid of people speaking other languages, because he's sure they're all talking about HIM. It's an ego problem.

Personally, I believe that students in the U.S. should be required to take a second language, be it Spanish, Russian, German, Japanese, Chinese - it doesn't matter.

This would not only help the student understand things out side their immediate sphere (learning a language will also require you to learn about the culture), but it also changes the way you actually think and interpret things.

As for Americans being foolish and dull. Have you been to the U.S.?

Yes, many things we do appear to be foolish. However, that is just the surface. Once you get to know a people, you will see that perceptions of them change.

Dull? Americans are a lot of things - dull is NOT a word that usually comes to mind when discussing what we are.

And please remember this - that English (not necessarily American English) is the language of business.
